We have started our retell unit learning about characters and setting. I looked back at my blog from 2013(!) and found this craft activity, so here I am setting up for it all over again! Everything retro comes back into vogue again, right? 😳😂

Fine motor and a connection to our English and Science units all in one.

This is an easy activity to do alongside a text like Kootear the Echidna or The Echidna and the Shade Tree during a traditional stories unit or to connect to learning about Aussie animals and their external features in science.

We made these cute possums after reading Blossom Possum: The Sky is Falling Down by Gina M. Newton. We set up a few writing rotations so we could work with small groups. One was working on retelling the story, another was working in fine motor with paper tearing to make these possums.

We've been learning lots about representing number

We've been learning lots about representing numbers and making bundles of 10 to make counting easier in year 1 the last couple of weeks. This was some our rotations this week.

1. Count the Carrots. Students tipped out the contents of the carrots, added to 10-frames, then counted to find the value. Carrots 1 to 3 had less objects and a 100 board with multiples of 10 highlighted was provided to students who needed support.

2. Spin It To Win It. Students spun the spinner and collected that number of sticks (or unifix cubes depending on student choice as they are easier to bundle). Once they had 10 or more, they could bundle into 10s. Winner was the first to reach 10 bundles, or 100. A place value chart was also provided for students to keep track of 10s and 1s.

3. Number Representation Around the Room. Students visited the cards and used skip counting to work out the value of the cards. Hands, jars, cookies, unifix, base 10 blocks, tally marks etc were some of the representations. A 100 board with 10s and 5s patterns was provided for those needing support.

Creating glossary pictures to help us learn techni

Creating glossary pictures to help us learn technical vocab was a sure-fire hit in our class last week. We used Endangered Animals A-Z and Australian Animals A-Z by Jennifer Cossins to identify technical vocab, used context clues and/or dictionaries to make meaning and created pictures to go with each word. The reading lesson was from @hellocleverbean and tied in perfectly with our Science unit 😊

Last week we started learning about measurement in

Last week we started learning about measurement in Year 4, with a focus on length. We estimated and measured the length of the cats' tails (ribbons!). This is always a favourite activity for my class.

For younger kids, you can use non-standard units like unfix cubes to measure the tails and trim the ribbon to a whole number.
